The project aims to advance innovative forest management and develop novel forest services, products, and technologies in Latvia. By addressing the knowledge gap in multifunctional forest management, it will conduct a standardised, comprehensive experimental assessment of tree survival, growth, stand biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change.
The project will also focus on an interdisciplinary, stakeholder-driven socio-economic assessment of forest management scenarios, including climate change mitigation and substitution effects. This assessment will inform policy recommendations and promote sustainable practices.
Project will explore the options for more rational use of forest resources in recycling and biorefinery processes, supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. Innovative solutions will include advanced wood construction techniques, enhanced utilization of forest sector by-products, and the development of technologies for producing biological, chemical, and polymer materials. These innovations aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stimulate economic growth.
Additionally, the project will educate young and emerging researchers, equipping them with the skills to holistically assess the environmental and economic impacts of the forest-to-product value chain, fostering expertise for sustainable forestry practices.
